The Sheep Detectives, Movie Review
The local police are completely out of their depth trying to solve the village's first-ever murder, so the sheep decide to step in and find the killer of their beloved shepherd. But can they actually pull it off? After all, solving a real-life murder mystery is a lot harder than reading a bedtime whodunnit novel—especially when you have hooves.
Ever since I watched the trailer, I was curious to see whether this Hugh Jackman movie could actually deliver. Actors coming off massive superhero franchises don't always have the best track record with their next projects—it instantly reminded me of Robert Downey Jr.’s Dr. Dolittle. Because of my deep love for detective fiction, I was mildly intrigued, but not entirely sold. However, after seeing the glowing reviews online, I decided to give it a chance and watch it with my wife.
Being a massive Bollywood fan, she took a little convincing to join me. Fortunately, the classic bribe of a dinner date afterwards worked like a charm, as it always does.
The Plot: A Flock of Sleuths
In this film, Hugh Jackman plays a devoted shepherd whose flock is his entire world. He cares for them, plays with them, tends to their medical needs, and reads them classic detective mysteries and whodunnit novels right before bed.

The sheep absolutely live for these nightly storytelling sessions, actively trying to piece together the clues along the way. Lily, the sharpest ewe in the flock, is a natural-born sleuth who manages to deduce the killer's identity before the end of every book.
The real mystery begins one night when the shepherd fails to read them their usual story. The next morning, he is found dead in his caravan. As the incapable local authorities stumble around, the flock realizes it is up to them to uncover who murdered their father like master.
The Vibe: Visuals and Heart
Set against the backdrop of a quiet, idyllic countryside, the movie is visually stunning. Every frame captures a gorgeous landscape—vibrant green meadows, crisp blue skies, frolicking lambs, and a colorful cast of village eccentrics who love to celebrate festivals big and small.
While cracking the case, the flock undergoes a journey of growth, learning to step out of their comfort zones, face hard realities, and learn the power of teamwork. Beneath the unusual premise lies a genuinely funny, innocent murder mystery with an emotional core that might just leave your eyes a little misty.
Wify's Verdict
As for my wife, while she absolutely loved the dinner afterwards, the movie itself actually won her over too. She really appreciated the unique storytelling style and found herself thoroughly charmed by the adorable lambs hopping around throughout the film.
Final Verdict
Ultimately, it is a heartwarming family movie and a delightful watch, especially for detective fiction enthusiasts, as it cleverly sneaks in the foundational basics of deduction. In an industry currently bogged down by superhero fatigue, it feels like a breath of fresh air.
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
